Internet marketing is a fairly easy business to learn. Most anyone can learn the skills needed to build a successful business online. You don’t need to be an MBA but you will need to know how to figure out a few internet marketing metrics.

You see, with all kinds of marketing you need to be able to determine what works and what doesn’t. All forms of marketing cost, whether the cost is in money or time. You can’t afford to waste either one on a marketing method that isn’t producing results.

This is where internet marketing metrics come into play. As an online business owner, you need to devote your resources only to those activities that actually help you make money.

All the other things are just a waste of time and should either be totally eliminated or outsourced to others so you can give your undivided attention to those activities that will increase your bottom line.

Here are just a few of the things you need to be able to monitor to make sure you are getting the most out of all your online efforts:

1. Website traffic. Of course, you want to know how much traffic your site is getting but there are many other things you want to be able to follow too. There are unique visitors vs. repeat visitors.

Knowing where the visitor is coming from as well as where they go when they leave your site. How much time does each visitor spend on your site? What page(s) do they go to?

All of these things will help you get a very complete picture of your website visitors and their behavior. That, in turn, will enable you to more effectively target them.

2. Knowing where visitors are coming from is also important if you want to know which marketing methods are the most effective. Most internet marketers will use various methods to get visitors to their sites. As I said above, those methods will require either time or money and you don’t want to waste either on things that don’t work.

Finding what keywords and marketing methods are really driving traffic to your site is very important. You can throw out those things that don’t work and put more effort into those that are extremely effective.

3. Email marketing is a very effective way of establishing rapport and trust with your website visitors. But, how can you know if your emails are getting opened and read?

What subject lines seem to work and which ones don’t? You need to be able to make changes and monitor the results of each change so you can hone the process down until you have the highest open rate you can get.

I know, if you are just starting out, that all of this can sound really confusing. But it’s not, once you get to know it. When you are just starting you will only be concentrating on getting traffic to your site, then you can start to learn how to tweak things to get the absolute best combination of settings.

How to – Internet Marketing Terms

All industries have their own unique language, the jargon of that particular industry. Internet marketing is no different. There are many unusual terms and names in internet marketing and if you aren’t familiar with what these internet marketing terms mean, it can be very confusing.

In this article, I will provide you with a brief description of some of the most common internet marketing terms and what they mean. That way you will have an easier time learning the basic skills you need to make money online instead of feeling like you were just dropped off in some strange foreign land!

These are the terms you are most likely to hear marketing online. Of course, I won’t be able to go over all of them in this article but I will give you a place to start:

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO): this is simply a way to optimize your website content and articles that you write so the search engines will find them. In order to do this, you find one keyword to target for each piece of content and that is what you optimize for.

2. Pay Per Click (PPC): this is a method for getting targeted traffic (people who are really interested in what you are talking about) to your website. You place an add targeting a certain group of keywords.

When someone does a search online for that keyword your ad (hopefully) will show up at the top of the page. When they click on it they will go to your site. You are only charged when someone clicks on your ad and not just when it shows up.

3. Autoresponder: This is an automated system where you can create a webform, add it to your website and when people sign up (which means they are giving you permission to send them emails) the follow-up emails that you have added to the autoresponder will go out automatically.

4. Squeeze Page (sometimes called a capture page): this is a page that has only one purpose and that is to get people to opt-in or sign up to your email list. They either sign up or leave. There is nothing else to do on this page and no navigation to allow them access to other pages of your site.

5. Keywords: these are the words or phrases people search for when looking for something online. For example, if I were looking for information on how to train my dog I would probably type in the keyword “how to train a dog” that is considered a long-tailed keyword since it has several words.

This list is obviously not exhaustive, but hopefully, I’ve covered some of the most common, and confusing, terms around.

When starting an internet marketing career your best bet (and believe it or not it’s not something most people do) is to invest some time and possibly some money to get training. Most people, who aren’t internet marketers, don’t fully understand what internet marketing really is all about. At its core, internet marketing is just a way to use the vast potential of the internet to find more customers. There are many things you will want to learn when you start marketing online and that is where advanced internet marketing training comes in.

Obviously, before you worry about advanced internet marketing you need to make sure you have a firm grasp of the basics. With so many methods to connect with others online, you must know what works, and what doesn’t.

Another thing you should keep in mind is that things online change quickly. What worked great yesterday, or last year, either might not work as well or they might not work at all.

A big part of the reason for this is that the search engines are continually updating their programming (their algorithms) in the hopes of improving the experiences of their searchers.

2. Pay Per Click (PPC) – this advanced technique of getting traffic can work quickly but only after you learn how to do it. There is a learning curve and it will cost you if you make mistakes.

3. Email Marketing: this is more about “bonding” with your website visitors and building trust with them than actually driving traffic. Online it can be hard to stand out from the crowd and let people “get to know you” or trust you. By having a chance to send them emails over a period of time you can build rapport with them.

Learning some basic and advanced internet marketing skills can help you turn your business into a very profitable endeavor. It doesn’t matter if you have an offline business or an online business, learning new skills can help you make more money.

With so many people losing their homes and jobs there is a virtual stampede to the internet and all the riches it has to offer. The only problem with that is the riches are there but they are buried. In order to know where to find them and how best to mine them, you need the most up to date internet marketing information you can find.

Too many people fall for the hype online. You know what I’m talking about. The “3 clicks to riches” type of product. The promise that you can become incredibly wealthy with no work and in very little time. That hype.

You can become very wealthy online. As a matter of fact, I heard recently that there are more new millionaires made online today than in any other industry. It is possible but only after you have sound internet marketing information and training.

To maximize your chances of success online in the shortest amount of time, follow these simple tips:

1. Do not expect something for anything. It will take time and hard work to build your online business. It is true that building a business online is much quicker, cheaper and easier than offline but that does not mean it will be a walk in the park.

2. Do not buy one “sure thing” system after another. There are many, many ways to make money online. Find one system that you like and copy it. Keep at it until you have perfected it and are making money. Then, if you want, you can expand out but learn one thing inside and out first.

3. Do not think you can do it all with no training. Be willing to spend time, and possibly money, to have someone teach you the basic skills you need. Once you’ve got the basics down you can learn more advanced techniques. The good thing is that even with just knowledge of basic skills you should be able to be making some money online.

From that point, you can expand your knowledge and your business and start making even more money if you choose. It’s up to you. But you must learn to walk before you can run.

4. Do not listen if someone tells you that you don’t need your own website, you do. Think of it like this, if you were building a store offline would you just go put it up on someone else land? No.

Online real estate is getting more valuable all the time. When you get your own domain name and hosting account, you then own that piece of internet real estate.

And don’t fall for the “I’ll build your site for you” garbage. Today most internet marketers put up WordPress blog-style sites which an absolute beginner can probably do themselves in about 30 minutes their first time.

It’s easy, you can do it yourself don’t let anyone try to scam you into paying them to do it for you.

Tutorial For CSS

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is just another way to code web pages in addition to using HTML.  CSS determines the overall look and feel of any given web page in a site.  Finding a quality tutorial for CSS can help you get the most out of this evolving coding language and create really inspiring web pages for your website, or you can become a freelancer and get paid by others to create awesome websites for them.

Since you will use CSS in conjunction with your HTML tags, it is important that you already have a good understanding of HTML. You need to be able to understand at least the basic tags and their function in HTML before you can integrate CSS components. Again, finding a good tutorial for CSS will help you with understanding CSS but not with HTML.

You will have to use CSS within your HTML tags and this is referred to as creating styles. It steps one in learning CSS.  So, if you were trying to create a web page with a certain background color you can use an HTML tag along with CSS attributes to signify not only the desired background color of your page but other attributes too.

Using CSS to create an internal style sheet allows you to create multiple page styles, instead of each page has the exact same attributes, you can have one page with some attributes and another page with totally different attributes. Just by placing the CSS tags in the head of each page, you can alter the look of a given page, but only that page. The rest of the pages can stay the same, or have their own unique look.

You can create an external style sheet and instead of just making changes to one page on the website you can make changes to multiple pages on the website.  You can do this by linking multiple pages so they all share certain style attributes, or many different style attributes.

If you choose, you can also make changes to individual pages in that group as necessary. So many pages can easily be configured to have the same style attributes but one page within that group (or more pages if you want) can have additional attributes not shared by the other pages in the group.

To further increase your knowledge and to get some inspiration, you can view the source code of any page online that you visit. All you need to do is right-click when your cursor is on a certain page. You will see a dialog box and one of the options will be something like “view source code”.

You can copy that code to a notepad file where you can study it. Remember, though, that someones else’s web design is intellectual property. It’s no different than someone’s blog post or article. You should never just copy something you find online. You can make changes to what you find and use the code as an inspiration or a teaching tool, but don’t copy it directly.
